I have been accused of having ADD, who knows, they might be right. But, there are definitely times where I go in and out of phases in which I am hyper focused and then other times that I am not. However, I was thinking about it today, and I don’t think I have a problem with focusing on something. I have problem focusing on the thing that needs to get down. I have no problem getting sucked into simple unimportant tasks when what I really should be doing is creating a proposal. My issue isn’t that I can’t focus, it is that I choose to let myself procrastinate more important things because they are difficult, or I don’t know how to begin working on them.

For example, today the only thing that I needed to get done was the proposal for Paradigm Dental. It was the one task that was absolutely critical for me to complete that would add direct value to the business. But, what ended up happening is I started doing other tasks, and I spent probably 4 or 5 hours working on things that were fun for me, but didn’t really directly benefit the company TODAY. It might be helpful that I compiled a list of all the reviews from Beaverton Oral Surgeons, and it may be good that I spent an hour fiddling with our new 360 camera, but what I should have done was not done anything except the contract until I was done.

My goal for tomorrow morning is to go to work, write my 500 words and then immediately write the proposal for Paradigm Dental.

I know that the biggest obstacle for me in writing the proposal is that it is very open ended and there is not really any specific thing that we need to get done or that we have to do for the doctor. So what I need to do is do something similar to how I write these posts. I need to just begin writing and jot down all of the ideas that I can think of that a dentist might be able to benefit from to help them grow their practice.

I think what I am going to try for the next 30 days is “the most important thing,” this is the idea that we all have a lot of things that we need to do on our to-do list. But, what we need to do after writing those to-do lists is immediately prioritize what the most important thing that we could possibly do that day, and then only work on that one specific thing until it is done, and then we move onto the next big thing.

My hope is that in doing this exercise I will be working on my ability to focus, and I know that when I am able to focus on chipping away at the most important thing I will begin to make progress towards success. Because the most important thing that anyone could know about being successful in life is, “focus precedes success.”
